Certification for Hazardous Materials TransportationCertification for Hazardous Materials Transportation: A Comprehensive Guide
The transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat) requires strict regulations to ensure public safety and prevent accidents. In the United States, the Department of Transportations Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulates the transportation of hazmat through various regulations, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). To transport hazmat safely, individuals must obtain proper training and certification.
What is Hazmat Certification?
Hazmat certification is a required qualification for anyone who handles or transports hazardous materials. It involves demonstrating knowledge and skills in handling hazardous materials safely, understanding regulations, and recognizing potential hazards. The FMCSA requires hazmat employers to ensure that their drivers and personnel are properly trained and certified.
Who Needs Hazmat Certification?
Any individual involved in the transportation of hazardous materials must be certified. This includes:
UN 0012 - Explosives (includes dynamite, nitroglycerin)
UN 1115-1175 - Flammable liquids (includes gasoline, diesel fuel)
UN 1012-1029 - Flammable gases (includes propane, butane)
UN 1808-1811 - Corrosive substances (includes sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid)
UN 2810-2814 - Poisonous or toxic materials (includes mercury, cyanide)
